The highest valued diamond is truly colourless, yet most contain a degree of tints ranging from yellow to brown. These subtle differences are invisible to the naked eye. A gem expert can measure and evaluate under controlled lighting using the colour scale graded from D-Z.

One carat equals 20 milligrams (or 0.2 grams) in weight. Larger diamonds are rare, but smaller ones are more likely to have higher clarity and colour.
